Skinny Puppy : Anger : Cleanse Fold and Manipulate (1987)

Yeah I’m pissed tonight. Between the local camera shop and the Canon repair center… it’s been 8 weeks and my repair HASN’T EVEN BEEN STARTED. In a nutshell, I found out three weeks after I authorized the repair that the camera store didn’t inform Canon that I’d authorized the repair. Four weeks after that the store said they submitted but couldn’t get a hold of anyone there to get an ETA. Today find out that Canon sent a repair estimate approval request to the camera store wondering if the camera was authorized to be fixed. I HAVE A WEDDING TO SHOOT IN 24 DAYS PEOPLE!

So here’s a good anger song, crap video to boot - good old school Canadian talent.

threesixtyfive : twothirteen : o canada!

July 2nd, 2008 by Haeretik

O Canada : Calixa Lavallee, Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier, Robert Stanley Weir (1880)

Today was Canada Day so it was only fitting… spent the day with the family and my parents at some of the downtown Canada Day festivities.

From Wikipedia:

"O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by the then Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, the Honourable Théodore Robitaille, for the 1880 St. Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony. Calixa Lavallée wrote the music, which was a setting of a patriotic poem composed by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The text was originally only in French.

An English translation of the lyric did not appear until 1906, and it was two more years before Robert Stanley Weir penned an English version, which is not a translation of the French. Weir’s words have been revised twice, taking their present form in 1980, but the French lyrics remain unaltered. "O Canada" was not officially Canada’s national anthem until 1980, when it was signed into law on July 1 as part of that year’s Canada Day celebrations.

The official English and proper French translations are quite different indeed!

One of the best performances of our national anthem I’ve ever heard… yeah it helps to be an Oilers fan ;)

=======================================================================

Official (English)
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Official (French)
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits;
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Translation of French Lyrics
O Canada!
Land of our forefathers
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.

Pearl Jam : Low Light : Yield (1998)

Just playing with my new toy… picked up a Speedlite 430EX! Now I have about a month to learn how to use it before the wedding shoot - figured I’d test it on me first… turned out all the lights and let the flash do it’s work… anyone have any guides or cheat sheets???

Anyways, this is a killer track… and the title fit ;)

Snag a listen and watch the live performance.

Didn’t do much to this shot either, MINOR brightness/contrast and a bit of an unsharpen mask.

===================================================================

Clouds roll by
Reeling is what they say
Or is it just my way?
Wind blows by, low light
Side-tracked, low light
Can’t see my tracks, your scent-way back

Can I be here all alone?
Clear a path to my home
Blood runs dry
Books and jealousy tell me wrong
I WILL feel, calm
Voice blows by, low light
Car crash, low light
Can’t wear my mask, your first, my last

Voice goes by
Two birds is what they’ll see
Getting lost upon their way
WIND ROLLS by, low light
Eye sight, low light
I need the light
I’ll find my way from wrong, what’s real?
The dream I see

threesixtyfive : twohundredten : fade to black

June 30th, 2008 by Haeretik

Metallica : Fade to Black : Ride the Lightning (1984)

Homage/tribute to M. Gruber. He just completed this 365 - well done man, seriously… For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure, check out his journey.

To be honest, it’s tough to pull of a Gruber shot! Why’d I pick this one? Because it spoke to me most amongst all his shots - there’s a few out there who put their heart and soul into their work and haven’t received the recognition… yet. Matt, your day will come my friend, hopefully sooner than later - you deserve it.

Snag a listen.

========================================================================

Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else

I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things aren’t what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can’t be real
Can not stand this hell I feel

Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he’s gone

No one but me can save myself, but it’s too late
Now I can’t think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye, *Goodbye*

Marshall Lawrence : Doctor of the Blues

Friday at the annual Works Art & Design Festival featured an acoustic blues performance by Marshall Lawrence, the Doctor of the Blues.

Decent show, would have liked to hang out longer but work beckoned!

Check out the complete set, as always will be uploading over the next couple days…

Once again - reflected in the shades… was hoping for a full week but couldn’t get out 2 of the days. Nice to get these out of the way early on in the day as well!

Dr. Draw

Today’s performance at lunch was provided by Dr. Draw. Interesting mix of instruments - electric violin, electric guitar, electric harp, bass, keyboards and drums… was very cool though, lots of energy.

Anyways, check them out - here’s me reflected in the glasses of Tim, the guitarist for the group while performing at The Works Street Stage. Was a much different shoot - a little harder shooting a band of 6 as opposed to two. More pictures to come!

Here’s a video but it really doesn’t do them justice, they need to be seen live!

Be sure to check out the rest of the set!

Linkin Park : Numb : Meteora (2003)

Insert revealing rambling thoughts here… probably won’t… venture under the surface with me?

Listen/watch.

forlorn \fur-LORN; for-\, adjective:

1. Sad and lonely because deserted, abandoned, or lost.
2. Bereft; forsaken.
3. Wretched or pitiful in appearance or condition.
4. Almost hopeless; desperate.

UPDATE: Explore #258

=====================================================================

I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)

[Chorus]
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I’m becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

Can’t you see that you’re smothering me
Holding too tightly afraid to lose control
Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take

[Chorus]
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I’m becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me with someone disappointed in you

[Chorus]
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I’m becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

[Chorus]
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
I’m tired of being what you want me to be
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
I’m tired of being what you want me to be

Curtis Santiago

Going to be a good week for lunch shooting… the yearly The Works Art & Design Festival is in full swing.

This is Mike Schlosser, the guitarist for Curtis Santiago performing at The Works Street Stage. Be sure to check them out, really dug TKO.

And yes, this counts… I’m reflected in his shades. Heh, sorry for those of you who thought I got a new hairdo and career! Plenty more to come, took about 190 pictures, and had quite a few turn out!

Don’t forget to check out the rest of the set, hope to have the processing done over the next couple days!
